6F2 vs MOT Type 1: Which Aggregate Does Your Project Need?
When starting any groundworks project – whether building a commercial haul road, prepping a driveway or laying foundations for a garden building – selecting the right sub-base or capping material is critical.
Two of the most popular heavy-duty materials in UK construction are 6F2 and MOT Type 1. Whilst they might look somewhat similar in a bulk pile, they serve distinct structural roles on-site. Using the wrong one can lead to uneven settling, poor compaction or unnecessary expenditure.
Here is a clear guide comparing 6F2 vs MOT Type 1, their key differences, and how to choose the right aggregate for your project.
What is 6F2?6F2 is a coarse recycled aggregate containing a blend of crushed brick, concrete, mortar and stone. As it is produced from recycled materials, its precise composition and grading can vary depending on the source and batch.

What is MOT Type 1 Aggregate?
MOT Type 1 is a high-specification sub-base material. It is available as both a Primary (e.g. quarried limestone or gritstone) and Recycled (e.g. crushed concrete and brick) aggregate.

Type 1 MOT Image
- Size: Graded approximately from 40mm down to dust.
- Primary Role: Final load-bearing sub-base layer.
- Key Characteristics:
- Blended to achieve maximum density and compaction.
- Locks tightly together under roller or whacker plate compaction to form a rigid, flat platform.
- Designed to support heavy vehicle loads without shifting.

When Should You Use 6F2?
Choose 6F2 when you need bulk strength over large volumes or when working on soft, unstable ground.
When Should You Use MOT Type 1?
Choose MOT Type 1 when preparing the direct foundation layer immediately beneath your final surface.
Best Approach: Combining 6F2 and MOT Type 1
On larger groundworks projects, professional contractors rarely choose one over the other – they use both together in layers.
- Bottom Layer (Capping): Lay a layer of 6F2 to firm up soft sub-soil, fill depth and create a solid working surface.
- Top Layer (Sub-Base): Top with an least 100mm layer of MOT Type 1. Compact thoroughly to ensure that the top layer has no rough gaps, creating a smooth, flat, load-bearing surface.
This two-layer approach delivers maximum structural integrity whilst significantly reducing overall material costs.
