Which Pipe Bedding Aggregate Do I need: 10mm, 20mm or 40mm

When laying underground drainage, sewer pipes or land drains, choosing the correct aggregate size isn’t just a detail – it’s vital for the structural integrity of your pipeline. Using the wrong size can lead to uneven settlement, point loading, pipe sag or even costly structural fractures down the line.

Pipe bedding acts as a protective, free-draining cushion around underground utilities. However, the exact grade you need depends on the pipe diameter, pipe material and trench conditions.

Here is a clear guide to help you choose between 10mm, 20mm, and 40mm pipe bedding aggregates for your next project:

  1. 10mm Pipe Bedding (Single-Size Gravel / Shingle)

Best For: Small-diameter flexible pipes (100mm – 160mm)

Pipe Bedding Aggregate 10mm

10mm pipe bedding or gravel is the industry standard for domestic plastic drainage pipes (such as standard 110mm uPVC underground drainage and perforated landdrains).

  • As the stones are small and uniform, 10mm aggregate flows easily around the underside of plastic pipes. This allows it to fill the voids without requiring heavy mechanical compaction.
  • Small, rounded or single-sized angular stones distribute weight evenly around flexible plastic walls, preventing sharp stones from puncturing or stressing the pipe.
  • It is ideal for soakaways and French drain applications where maximum water flow through the gravel bed is required.
  1. 20mm Pipe Bedding (Single-Size Aggregate)

Best For: Medium to large pipes (150mm – 300mm+) & heavier loads

As pipe diameter increases, the bedding material needs to provide stronger physical support to hold the extra weight of the pipe and backfill.

  • 20mm single-size crushed stone or pea gravel provides superior load-bearing capacity compared to 10mm.
  • Rigid pipes (e.g. concrete stormwater pipes) benefit from 20mm bedding because the larger stones form a stable, interlocked base.
  • In ground conditions where water is present or trench bases are soft, 20mm aggregate provides greater ballast and stability, preventing the pipe from sinking into the subsoil.
  1. 40mm Pipe Bedding Aggregate

Best For: Large industrial culverts, land drainage & soft/boggy ground conditions

40mm aggregate is rarely used for standard domestic drainage pipes. Instead, it serves heavy civil engineering and main infrastructure projects.

  • Used for bedding large-diameter concrete drainage runs, deep-depth civil sewer mains, and heavy culverts.
  • Excellent for agricultural field drainage and high-capacity trench drains where maximum void ratio is needed to move large volumes of groundwater quickly.
  • Acts as a heavy sub-base layer to bridge extremely soft ground before adding a finer layer of 10mm or 20mm bedding directly beneath the pipe.

Key Installation Tips for Pipe Bedding

  1. Bedding Depth Matters: Always ensure a minimum bedding depth of 100mm beneath the pipe barrel before laying.
  2. Don’t Skip Haunching: Place bedding along the sides of the pipe and compact gently by hand to ensure the bottom half of the pipe is fully supported.
  3. Use Single-Size: Never use MOT Type 1 or scalpings directly around pipes as primary bedding – the fine dust holds water and does not allow proper drainage or self-compaction around the pipe underside.
